Successful Webinar:

The webinar Enabling Leadership Capacity for Higher Education Scholarship in Learning and Teaching (SOTL) through Action Research, held on 14 May 2021, was a great success. An engaging presentation by Marina Harvey and Sandra Jones had participants commenting on high valuable the webinar was to them.

The recording of the webinar is available on Vimeo - see the link on the ALARA site.

Workshop / Webinar - Action Learning / Action Research for Climate Action

Ernie Stringer will be a lead presenter at our workshop / webinar: Action Learning / Action Research for Climate Action - How can Action Learning / Action Research enhance climate action? Ernie recently released the fifth edition of his book, Action Research, which he will reference while leading this exploratory workshop / webinar. Mary Brydon-Miller will also be joining us from USA.

How can action learning and action research assist in the process of climate action and extend and enhance the efforts of those already undertaking climate action? What is being done in climate action using collaborative / participative methods such as action learning and action research, and what further could be done? Can ALARA's members and volunteers support future climate action initiatives?

This workshop will be conducted in Richmond Library in Melbourne Australia and broadcast as a webinar, so you can attend in person in Melbourne or join the webinar. The workshop / webinar will be held at 9.30 am on Friday 28 May 2021 (Australian Eastern Standard Time). Please see here for full details .

Webinar to be Confirmed - Getting Your Paper Published

ALARA is working with representatives of several action learning / action research publications, and one initiative of that work is this webinar, with a morning and an evening session to capture participants from around the world. The group of representatives are now looking at a short series, so the date remains a work-in-progress.

If you would like to assist, or present at a webinar, please send your ideas or offer of help to admin[at}alarassociation.org.

Notice the Difference - to the ALARA website?

Our web developed, Andrew, has updated the ALARA website with several features, including:

  • New icons instead of words for the main menu

  • Dropdown menus, so you can go to the page you want with one click

  • Additional categories in the menu, and therefore additional sections in the rolling banner on the Home page

  • Translation service for each page

  •

These changes involved many behind-the-scenes adjustments (which continue). For example, over fifty of the webpages changed in their locations in the menus, which means each page has to be modified so that they open correctly, and all links to those pages updated (which means hundreds of updates!). We hope the layout is clear and easier to use, and it will allow further expansion of pages.

If you find a link does not work, please contact ALARA.

Last Calls for Old ALARA Site

The old ALARA site (alara.net.au) is written in old code, and has not been updated for several years. We have been checking most of the webpages on that old site to copy anything that might be useful, and the time is fast approaching when ALARA will be removing the site. If there is anything you want from that site to keep, please copy it from the site before it closes in June.

Action Learning Facilitator and Action Learning Practitioner Programmes

The alliance between ALARA and the Global Centre for Work-Applied Learning (GCWAL) includes the introduction of new professional certifications as Action Learning Facilitators and Action Learning Practitioners, co-badged by ALARA and GCWAL. Information about the programmes are available on the GCWAL website and the linked brochures.

The alliance also provides support to ALARA to develop research in action learning and action research. More news will come on research initiatives under the alliance.

If you would like to know more, please see the GCWAL website or the ALARA website.

Reflective Practice Online

In 2020, a group of Australian academics and HEA fellows, known as a learning circle, launched a new (and free) Reflection for Learning Scholarly Practice. They now make a call to reflect online: "Are you researching, learning or teaching online? Reflective practices support learning (Harvey, Coulson & McMaugh, 2016) and they can be used in any research or learning environment, including online. Download the practice guide and view a video of a new practice you have not used before." See here for more information.

Evaluative Study of Action Research Book Published

The Evaluative Study of Action Research presents all eight published papers as part of the six-year, global, Evaluative Study of Action Research (ESAR) in one volume.
