ALARA Annual General Meeting Held

The Action Learning, Action Research Association Annual General Meeting has been held with only a small number of members in attendance. The Zoom meeting heard there was a small error in the finances (not affecting the total figures), which is now described in an erratum to the Annual Report. The meeting also began discussions about the future of ALARA, which the Board will consider further during the coming months.

ALARA Publications

Action Learning and Action Research Journal Special Issue published

A special issue of the ALARj has been published.

This issue is a special issue as it is a group of students who have been doing their PhDs using action research through Melbourne University, under the tutelage of Akihiro Omaga, with papers also by Davydd Greenwood and Yoland Wadsworth.

Action Research Practitioner Papers No. 1 now available

The book is entitled:
Spiral of Learning to Promote Participatory Action Research for Sustainable Development
Thoughts on fear, power, confusion and the ‘aha’ moment in learning

by Marc P. Lammerink. Marc presented at the 2020 ALARA-BALT Conference, and this book stems from that presentation. Details of where to access this book are available on the ALARA website.

As a series, the Action Research Practitioner Papers describes details of activity across any aspect of an initiative which otherwise may not be open to analysis or learning. These practices may include project management, facilitation, documentation, networking, collaboration, critical thinking and inquiry, systemic transformation, action research and action learning practice education and training, and/or self-reflection, for example. If you would like to prepare a submission for a Practitioner Papers publication, or know someone who has done the type of work that would be interesting reading in a Practitioner Papers publication, please email admin [at] alarassociation.org.

Thesis Research Notes

The Editorial team is seeking submissions of Thesis Research Notes written by Action Research (or Action Learning) master or doctoral students. The content would mostly focus on the journey they experienced during their studies. The students' supervisors will be invited to provide a response about the paper. Details of this initiative can be found on the ALARA site or in a video about the ALAR Journal, including a section on the new Thesis Research Notes. See the video here. Call for Monograph Submissions

ALARA has published seven monographs over the last several years. Monographs are usually 12-16,000 word papers, similar to journal articles, but which, due to their length, are published in a stand-alone booklet. You can view the published monographs here.

Our Monograph Editor, Eileen Piggot-Irvine, would welcome any new submissions. Please email them to admin [at] alarassociation.org. Submission guidelines are available here.

GCWAL

GCWAL-ALARA Certification Programmes

The alliance between ALARA and the Global Centre for Work-Applied Learning (GCWAL) includes professional certifications as Action Learning Facilitators, Action Learning Practitioners and Work-Applied Learning (WAL) Change Practitioners, co-badged by ALARA and GCWAL.

Discussions with several organisations in three countries continue, and ALARA can expect to see more skilled practitioners joining over coming months and years.

Information about the programmes are available on the GCWAL website and the linked brochures.

The alliance also provides support to ALARA to develop research in action learning and action research. More news will come on research initiatives under the alliance.

If you would like to know more, please see the GCWAL website or the ALARA website.

Treasurer Required, and New Research Co-ordinator

Our new Treasurer - only months into the role - had a change in his employment that has made continuing as Treasurer not possible. We thank Yang for his short time with us, and the very helpful ideas he provided, and we wish him all the best with the new responsibilities.

On a positive note, Dr Sumesh Nair has joined ALARA as the Research Co-ordinator, and he will be helping develop ALARA's research activities.

ALARA has an ongoing need for assistance in a range of activities for members. The call for people willing to assist in delivering these activities has become urgent as ALARA begins to prepare for events. Examples of these activities include:

  • As indicated, we are looking for Board members and several Committees Group (Co-ordinator) positions, so members are urged to consider expressing their interest for these positions by emailing as indicated below.
  • Proposals and assistance are sought to help plan, prepare and conduct webinars to fill the gap created by social distancing and lack of conferences.
  • A small committee is being formed to conduct a conference in Australasia in 2024, and the members of that committee are seeking additional volunteers.
  • Several members are involved in research, with at least two other projects on the horizon. The alliance with GCWAL (see above) also supports further research.
  • The recognition of Indigenous People and supporting their work in action learning and action research is another exciting opportunity.

If you would like to know more, or want to assist, please contact ALARA.
