ALARA presents  A Conversation with Ron Passfield, PhD - Director, Merit Solutions. Action Learning and Action Research for Mental Health in the Workplace

Where
Restaurant, Yeronga Village, 15 Cansdale St, Yeronga Qld 4104
Event description

Abstract:

The incidence of mental health issues in the workplace is increasing alarmingly and is compounded by toxic work environments created by narcissistic managers.  Over the past decade, Ron and his colleague, Julie Cork, have conducted more than 50 longitudinal action learning programs ranging from 4 to 6 months for managers in multiple roles and locations.  The program is focused on people management and is designed to help managers to create a workplace culture that is conducive to mental health. Two recent action research doctorates reinforce the value of action research/action learning interventions for improving mental health in the workplace – one focused on improving a toxic work environment where staff were experiencing considerable stress; the other focused on reducing the detrimental effects of trauma experienced by health professionals.  Despite a considerable legislative base reinforcing the responsibility of managers to ensure that the workplace does not contribute to, or aggravate, mental health illness, very little has been done formally by organisations in the public sector to equip managers for this accountability.  What can we do to improve mental health in the workplace through action learning and/or action research?
