New Membership Levels for ALARA members

At its meeting on 26 June, ALARA's Management Committee approved a new policy on Membership Levels, with associated changes to the Membership and Life Membership policies (the changes to these latter two policies referencing the new policy's content).

The Membership Levels policy introduces three additional "titles" associated with membership of ALARA: the existing Member level and the new levels of Associate Fellow, Fellow and Esteemed Fellow.

These arrangements were introduced partly in response to information received about the desire by some in the AL/AR community to be able to refer to their title when dealing with those outside the community. While understanding that not all members are interested in these titles (and there is no compulsion to use the titles), the Management Committee did recognise that their introduction would be an additional way to attract and retain members. By defining criteria for each level, the Management Committee also saw the opportunity to encourage members' continuing development and involvement in ALARA and AL/AR activities.

In broad terms the criteria for the levels are as follows.

  • Member - any person who is a financial member of ALARA

  • Associate Fellow - any financial member of ALARA who has completed education in action learning / action research to a level that is at least recognised for advanced standing to a Master or higher degree, and has been actively involved in action learning / action research activities over the previous twelve months

  • Fellow - a financial member of ALARA who has a Master or Doctorate in action learning / action research, has been actively engaged in significant action learning / action research activities over at least five years, and has been an active contributor to ALARA over the last twelve months

  • Esteemed Fellow - a financial member of ALARA who meets the criteria of Fellow, is recognised internationally or globally as a leader in action learning / action research, and has a history of active contribution to ALARA
