Governance

Action Learning, Action Research Association Ltd (ALAR Association, also known as ALARA) is an Australian Company Limited by Guarantee, registered as such since 2018. It was, until 2018, incorporated in the State of Queensland, Australia and under Queensland's Associations Incorporation Act 1981.

ALAR Association is a voluntary association, and a registered Charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profit Commission (ACNC).

ALAR Association's governance is by members and for members' interests, through a Board and Committees Group elected each year at the Association's Annual General Meeting. Records of decisions are communicated via the summary of minutes (for financial members only), and the Annual General Meeting receives reports from the President and Office Bearers, and includes the annual accounts (see Reports and Minutes of AGMs).

Members from all over the world give their time, skills, energy and knowledge to progress the work of ALAR Association as a whole, or their particular region or area of interest by supporting the Board or by being involved in local or other ALAR Association organising activities.

Of recent years (2006 - present), the relatively informal governance has been gradually codified into regularly reviewed policy documents, to create transparency and accountability, and to enact action learning and action research and document the resulting knowledge.

Current governance is enacted by a two-pronged approach:

  • A Board to manage the organisation and facilitate the achievement of ALAR Association's Purpose through meeting electronically up to nine times a year, as well as occasional face-to-face meetings to provide for extended discussion around issues, projects and action implementation; and

  • A Committees Group with project leadership for ALAR Association's web presence, publications, membership, marketing, streams, conferences and congresses and ensuring that all the functions are drawn together and operate synergistically to achieve the ALAR Association Strategic Plan.
