ALARA Inc is a voluntary association incorporated in the State of Queensland, Australia, and under Queensland's Associations Incorporation Act 1981.
ALARA's governance is by members and for members' interests, through a Management Committee elected each year at the Association's Annual General Meeting. Records of decisions are kept in its official minutes (for financial members only), and the Annual General Meeting receives reports from its President, the appointed auditor and its annual accounts (see Reports and Minutes of AGMs - financial members only).
Members from all over the world give their time, skills, energy and knowledge to progress the work of ALARA as a whole, or their particular region or area of interest by supporting the Management Committee or by being involved in local or other ALARA organising activities. Membership is in four categories - Individual, Organisational, ex-Offico and Life. Life membership is awarded from time to time for outstanding service to the work of ALARA and the Action Learning / Action Research community, while ex-Offico membership is awarded in exchange for services supplied to ALARA.
Of recent years (2006- present), the relatively informal governance has been gradually codified into regularly reviewed policy documents, to create transparency and accountability, and to enact action learning and action research and document the resulting knowledge.
Current governance is enacted by a three-pronged approach:
An Executive to deal with day to day matters and keep the activity on track;
A Working Group Committee with project leadership for the web, publications, membership, marketing and management, streams, conferences and congresses represented and ensuring that all the functions are drawn together and operate synergistically to achieve the ALARA Strategic Plan; and
A Management Committee (the Executive and Working Group together) meeting electronically up to eleven times a year, as well as occasional face-to-face meetings to provide for extended discussion around issues, projects and action implementation.
A range of Governance resources are available for Financial members here.
ALARA is now a registered Charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission (ACNC). Please go to the ACNC for more information about the benefits of this registration, and see ALARA's entry in the ACNC Register.
